M5Stack is selling the ToughC5 IoT Dev Kit (ESP32-C5), SKU K162, a weatherproof IoT controller built around Espressif's ESP32-C5HR8. It is in stock on M5Stack's own store at $49.90 USD as of October 20, 2026. The device pairs dual-band Wi-Fi 6, BLE 5 and an IEEE 802.15.4 radio with a 2.0-inch capacitive touchscreen, an RS485 port that also accepts a 6 to 24 V supply, and M12 cable routing holes for running wires into the housing.
CNX Software covered the launch on October 10, 2026, reporting a $49.9 price on AliExpress as well as the official M5Stack store.
A successor to the 2021 M5Stack TOUGH
CNX Software describes the ToughC5 as an upgrade to the ESP32-based M5Stack TOUGH from 2021. Beyond the move to the newer ESP32-C5 microcontroller, the AXP192 power-management IC of the older unit gives way to M5Stack's M5PM1 and M5IOE1 chips, and the TOUGH's 1 W speaker is replaced by a passive buzzer.
Built for outdoor and industrial nodes
M5Stack positions the ToughC5 for outdoor edge data collection, smart buildings and industrial gateways. The housing is PC + ABS with a UV-resistant additive, and expansion wiring enters through two M12 cable routing holes, one on each side. CNX Software also lists magnetic mounting. The radio mix lets one unit join 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks, talk to Bluetooth LE devices and sit on Zigbee or Thread networks, while the RS485 transceiver handles wired industrial equipment.
The "tough" label has limits. M5Stack gives no IP rating, describing the enclosure as having "standard water and dust resistance (not designed for immersion)."

M5Stack's documentation lists the same 8 MB of PSRAM as Quad rather than Octal, and a reader comment under the CNX Software article also says the part is quad SPI PSRAM, so anyone whose firmware configuration depends on the PSRAM interface should confirm it on the hardware.
CNX Software adds a 40 MHz low-power RISC-V core alongside the main core, 320 KB of ROM, Zigbee 3.0 and Thread 1.3 support, and a 4-pin I2C expansion header inside the waterproof housing. A single button handles power: a single click powers on or resets, a double click powers off, and a long press enters download mode, which M5Stack notes is used for recovering failed flashes after removing the housing.
What It Means for Makers
The ToughC5 suits builders who want a finished, screen-equipped enclosure for an outdoor sensor node, building-automation controller or industrial gateway. The RS485 port's DC input lets the unit draw power from the same connection it uses for the bus, and the 802.15.4 radio means the same box can sit on a Zigbee or Thread network while also reaching Wi-Fi on either band.
Practical points before buying:
- Plan additional protection for any location with standing water or submersion risk; the enclosure is not rated for immersion.
- Expansion runs through the four HY2.0-4P ports, each assigned a function (RS485, I2C, GPIO, UART), with external wiring routed through the M12 holes.
- For battery operation, power wiring and pin assignments, follow M5Stack's ToughC5 documentation rather than improvising.
The kit ships now from M5Stack's store, and CNX Software reports it is also listed on AliExpress.
